Senior Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon
Mr Vaughan Tanner is a highly regarded Senior Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon based in Berkshire. Utilising the most modern surgical techniques, Mr Tanner provides his patients with the highest level of personal care. The disorders that Mr Tanner provides treatments for include: Cataract surgery and multifocal lens implants, refractive lens exchange, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, posterior vitreous detachment, floaters, retinal tear, retinal detachment, age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion.
As a private consultant, Mr Tanner has developed a service that provides a premium level of personal care using the most advanced surgical techniques available. As an undergraduate, Mr Tanner was awarded Medical Research Council funding at the esteemed St George’s Hospital Medical School, London, where he studied medicine. He then proceeded to gain advanced specialist training at the Oxford Eye Hospital, through which he achieved a Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
Prior to his appointment as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Mr Tanner completed further advanced, sub-specialist Fellowships at both Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and St Thomas’ Hospital, London. During this time, he gained expertise in the surgical and medical management of all retinal disorders, including macular surgery.
Mr Tanner currently holds the role of Senior Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and King Edward VII Hospital. His regarded work also includes being at the head of a specialist vitreo-retinal surgical service for all of Berkshire, establishing a sub-specialist age related macular degeneration service, providing an expert micro incision cataract service, and leading a general ophthalmic team providing care for acute and routine eye conditions.
To date, Mr Tanner has performed or supervised over 15,000 major intraocular cataract and retinal procedures.
Mr Tanner’s comprehensive experience in ophthalmology is vast and has led to national recognition. He has previously held roles in the ophthalmology department as both Lead Clinician and Clinical Governance at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, and his years of high quality work has led to him being awarded three NHS clinical excellence awards.
He is currently a Consultant Clinical Supervisor for The Oxford Deanery School of Ophthalmology and also leads the Fellowship in Advanced Vitreo-Retinal Surgical Techniques.
Mr Tanner has pioneered the use of several modern retinal treatments. The new treatments introduced by Mr Tanner includes lucentis and eylea injections, ozurdex steroid implants and jetrea treatment. These innovations have improved the vision of a large number of patients suffering from age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion and other retinal problems.
Mr Tanner's subspecialist interests and recent advances include the introduction of sub-2mm micro-incision cataract extraction with multifocal and toric lens implants, including the Vivity Lens, designed to significantly reduce spectacle dependence following cataract surgery. He has also developed sutureless small incision vitrectomy techniques for epiretinal membrane and macular hole repair.

As a recognised expert in ophthalmology, Mr Tanner has been actively involved in clinical research. His findings have been presented to his peers at numerous medical events, and Mr Tanner has produced many scientific publications.
He co-authored "Diseases of the Ocular Fundus", a book which was named the "Best Authored Post Graduate Textbook" by the Royal Society of Medicine and the Royal Society of Authors. He has previously hosted both the Southern and National Annual Meetings of the British and Eire Association of Vitreo-Retinal Surgeons, and is an invited scientific reviewer for the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
