Consultant Gastroenterologist


Dr Philip Woodland is Consultant Gastroenterologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Royal London Hospital (Barts Health NHS Trust). An advanced endoscopist, he offers private diagnosis and treatment for gastrointestinal problems at two leading independent hospitals in London, the Princess Grace Hospital and BMI The London Independent Hospital.


Dr Woodland studied at University College London Medical School. Following his basic medical training on the Barts and The London medical rotation, Dr Woodland trained in gastroenterology at several top London hospitals. His research into gastro-oesophageal reflux disease led to the award of a PhD from Queen Mary University of London and led to the award of a prestigious NIHR Clinical Lectureship at the Royal London Hospital, allowing him to continue his research into oesophageal disorders and to complete training in advanced endoscopic techniques. Subsequently, he was appointed as a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Royal London Hospital.

    Clinical interests

  • Dr Woodland provides investigation, diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders, including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (acid reflux), Barrett’s oesophagus, difficulty swallowing and oesophageal motility disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and colitis) and cancers affecting the gastrointestinal tract.


    Trained in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic techniques, Dr Woodland is highly skilled in reaching the correct diagnosis and recommending the most suitable course of treatment in each individual case. Friendly and approachable, he always aims to make patients feel at ease, giving them the time needed to fully discuss their symptoms and any resulting impact on their lives.

    Research interests

  • With an active research portfolio at Barts & The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Dr Woodland’s research interests include gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and swallowing difficulties. He regularly gives talks at international meetings on these subjects and has authored numerous papers and book chapters on gastrointestinal disease.


    Dr Woodland is on the British Society of Gastroenterology Neurogastroenterology Committee and is a member of the editorial board for the Neurogastroenterology & Motility Journal. He also peer reviews research proposals for the Bowel and Cancer Research Grants committee and the National Institute of Health Research.
