Urticaria is commonly known as hives. It is a condition in which a rash appears on the skin. It has two main types. Acute urticaria and chronic urticaria. The main symptoms of urticaria are itching, redness and a raised rash. A rash of acute urticaria disappears within 24 hours. Chronic urticaria may last for 6 to 12 weeks. Stress and alcohol may be considered to be triggers. It occurs as a result of increased histamine release. Treatment is not usually mandatory. Antihistamines and oral corticosteroids are prescribed for severe cases.
