Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is a pre-natal diagnostic test for Down’s syndrome. It involves taking a small sample of placenta by a needle inserted through the abdomen or cervix. It is usually performed after 10 weeks of pregnancy. The position of the needle is guided by an ultrasound.  Complications are infection, heavy bleeding and miscarriage.
