Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an infertility treatment technique in which a sperm is injected directly into an egg. Eggs are collected from the ovaries via the same method as for an IVF procedure. Fertilization takes place by directly injecting a sperm into the egg, rather than fertilizing it in a dish in the laboratory. This can only be done if the partner is able to provide a healthy sperm sample. If this is not possible, sperm may have to be removed directly from the testicles or from the epididymis by using a type of fine syringe.
