Consultant Gastroenterologist


Following a Batchelor of Science degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1994, Dr Rami Sweis undertook his basic medical training at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1999. His specialist gastroenterology training was completed at King`s College London and Guys and St Thomas` Hospital, during which time, he gained extensive experience in oesophageal physiology techniques. He completed his PhD in upper GI physiology at King`s College London in 2012.


Dr Sweis undertook further specialist training in upper GI endoscopic techniques at University College Hospital in London whilst, as a locum Consultant leading the lower GI EMR service at a hospital in East Kent. He was appointed Consultant in Upper GI Medicine at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) in 2014 where he is currently Lead in Upper GI Physiology and Honorary Senior Lecturer at UCL.


With over 10 years` experience in his field, Dr Sweis is internationally recognised for his expertise in the management of benign and malignant disorders of the upper GI tract and offers treatment for a wide range of conditions including reflux disorders, Barrett`s oesophagus, oesophageal spasm, achalasia, indigestion, IBS and food intolerances. As both an upper GI physiologist and an advanced endoscopist, he is able to provide a unique, patient centred approach to the treatment of upper GI conditions, treating many functional disorders medically and through the use of behavioural medication therapy.

    Clinical interests

  • Dr Sweis is interested in all Upper GI issues with a special interest in: 

    • Endoscopy 
    • Management of benign and malignant upper GI disorders 

    Research interests

  • Dr Sweis is actively involved in the research and development of technology and methods for the investigation and treatment of reflux and swallowing disorders. He has a particular research interest in High Resolution Manometry and catheter/wireless pH-monitoring (BRAVO pH monitoring). 


    Dr Sweis has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in esteemed journals and continues to collaborate with fellow experts in the UK and abroad. Not only this, but Dr Sweis is also regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences on the subject of his research.
