MB ChB, FRCS, ECFMG

Mr Majid Hashemi is a Consultant Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College London Hospitals. With over 24 years’ experience in the field of Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery, he provides private weight loss surgery and treatment for gastric and oesophageal conditions at the Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth in North London.

Mr Majid Hashemi qualified as a doctor from Manchester University and undertook his training in London and at hospitals in East Anglia, including Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. A 15-month Oesophageal Fellowship at Dr Tom DeMeetster’s department at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, USA, developed his interest and expertise in the role of oesophageal function in health and disease, as well as the diagnostic and therapeutic options for reflux disease.

Mr Majid was appointed as Senior Lecturer at University College London and Consultant Surgeon at the Whittington Hospital in 2001. During this time he established and led the bariatric surgery service in North London and developed an innovative multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach, helping patients to make treatment decisions based on input from specialists from a range of related disciplines.

Since 2007, Mr Majid has been Lead for Oesophageal and Gastric Surgery and Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer at University College Hospital, where, in addition to surgery for obesity and oesophageal reflux or motility problems, he performs major oesophageal and gastric resections as part of UCLH’s Cancer Centre team.

    Clinical interests

  • To date, Mr Majid has performed over 3,000 operations on the stomach and oesophagus. His clinical interests include laparoscopic (keyhole) bariatric surgery and the assessment and treatment of patients with oesophageal reflux or motility problems, including those that require revision surgery.

Combining the latest scientific evidence with his own extensive experience, Mr Majid is committed to providing his patients with informed and personalised care, fully involving them in the decision-making process to find the best treatment solution in each individual case.

Mr Hashemi is now offering a pioneering treatment for bad reflux in patients who have had sleeve gastrectomy. Having performed the first laparoscopic Linx implant in London in 2010, he is now able to perform the Linx implant for patients after receiving sleeve gastrectomy.

    Research interests

  • Mr Majid plays an active role in training, education and research. He was Surgical Tutor and Academic Lead for Surgery at the Whittington and Archway Campus from 2001-2007 and Chair of the Surgery Module Management Group for undergraduate studies for University College London Medical School from 2007-2010.

Mr Majid has taken part in advanced laparoscopic training workshops in the UK and abroad, performing both laparoscopic and bariatric procedures, and has played lead and supervisory roles in research projects that have resulted in publications in scientific journals.
