Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that mainly affects the lungs. It is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Symptoms include a persistent cough, weight loss, night sweats, fever, fatigue and loss of appetite. It is diagnosed by chest X-rays, blood tests and a skin test known as Mantoux test. Treatment depends on the type of TB. Wide range of anti-tuberculosis drugs are available e.g. isoniazid and rifampicin.
