Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infectious disease. It is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks. This infection mainly involves the central nervous system. Symptoms are fever, headache, fatigue, muscle ache, meningitis and encephalitis. These symptoms resolve without any treatment. A more severe form presents as changes in the mental state, seizures, photophobia and paralysis. Diagnosis is made by a blood test or a lumbar puncture. Possible complications are memory disorders and behavioral changes. Treatment is usually symptomatic and supportive with paracetamol, ibuprofen, intravenous fluids and nursing care.
