Friedreich ataxia is a degenerative disease that involves the heart and the nervous system. There is progressive ascending weakness along with loss of joint functions, loss of vibration, arrhythmias and scoliosis. Patients develop an unsteady gait, deterioration in movement, with symptoms of cardiomyopathy or scoliosis and so on. There is no treatment for Friedreich’s ataxia and usually physical and occupational therapy is done to help the patient adapt to his symptoms.
